Transportation

Dear Norfolk,

I shouldn't have to press a walk button to get a walk signal at an intersection, especially not downtown or in other urban neighborhoods. Let the signals switch themselves to walk on a regular cycle, just like any big city does. Pedestrians should be priority #1 and should not have to go out of their way to press ridiculous buttons just to get a walk signal.

Dear Norfolk,

You're the reason that Hampton Roads as a region exists. You should act like it. Stop taking a back seat to other suburban cities who, through quirks of state law, became (or will become) larger than you in population. You are the heart of this region. You can attract young, educated professionals to your urban amenities. You have it all...a real downtown, light rail, Amtrak, bus and ferry, a medical school, two universities, an art museum, historic n'hoods, independent biz...Assert yourself

Urban Planning & Public Space

Dear Norfolk,

Why can't you shake the fake historic architecture? Yes, Virginia has a history of colonial buildings. No, you do not need to create ersatz replications of that style on every new building. Modern architecture comingling with authentic historic architecture gives a city a sense of time and history. The new glassy Slover Library addition is amazing; the new milquetoast Courts complex, Amtrak station, and Tide stations are not.

Transportation

Dear Norfolk,

Why is pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure so poor? The Elizabeth River Trail is almost a joke. Bike lanes on the street mostly don't exist. Crosswalks are hard to come by. Road construction is allowed to seriously inconvenience bikers and walkers.
